Wiegenlied Fur Zachary: A Song History

← Back to Browse By Song

"Wiegenlied Fur Zachary" is the last of the fifteen titles listed for Dana Gruber's Lullabies, a collection of songs from around the world arranged for mountain dulcimer and published by Fingers Of Steel; the listing presents it as a duet and sets it in DGD tuning, the only entry not in DAD.[1] Unlike "Lullaby For Benjamin," which the same listing credits to Gruber, this title carries no composer credit.[1] The book is arranged mostly for solo dulcimer, with some duets and ensemble pieces.[1]

Cradle, mahogany and white pine, 1762. Shown for the lullaby in the title; it has no connection to the piece.

The title is German: Wiegenlied is the word for a lullaby, and für means "for."[2][3] Her DulcimerDownloads biography dates Gruber's introduction to the instrument to 1997, when she and her husband, Hank, encountered it at an Appalachian Festival in Cincinnati, Ohio; the two have played together as an instrumental duo since then.[4] The sources consulted here do not say who Zachary is, who composed the piece, or whether it has been recorded.[1][4]
