Walking Off The Egg Nog: A Song History

"Walking Off The Egg Nog" is one of three original tunes by Bing Futch in his Mountain Dulcimer In The Band (Book 7), according to the book's listing in Futch's official online store.[1] The other two originals are "Campin'" and "West Lafayette Reel," and the listing names thirteen further titles, among them "Squirrel Heads In Gravy" and "Turkey In The Straw."[1] As the book's download listing describes it, the collection offers sixteen tunes chosen with flatpicking in mind, along with two sets of recordings: one pairing demonstrations with backing tracks, the other carrying only the backing tracks for practice.[2] In the sources consulted here, nothing is said about when Futch wrote the tune or what prompted its title.[1][2]

Futch co-founded the band Mohave in 1999, playing mountain dulcimer, and in 2006 began performing solo at festivals and venues around the country.[3] His blues playing has twice taken him to the International Blues Challenge in Memphis; on the second trip, in 2016, he reached the finals and received the solo/duo "Best Guitarist" award despite playing nothing but the dulcimer.[3]
