Unresolved: A Song History

← Back to Browse By Song

Of the twelve pieces in Ellen Pratt's Ensemble Arrangements For The Mountain Dulcimer, Volume 2, ten are scored for three dulcimers, and "Unresolved" is one of the two that call for a fourth player.[1] The DulcimerDownloads listing, which names Pratt as the book's publisher, gives DAC tuning for all four of its parts.[1] On the book's contents page, reproduced with that listing, the piece is marked in common time and assigned pages 41 to 44; a minuet credited to Bach is the only other title there given DAC, with every remaining piece in DAD or DGD.[1]

James McNeill Whistler, Unfinished Sketch of Lady Haden, lithograph, 1895. Shown for its unfinished state; it has no connection to the piece.

Whether "Unresolved" is Pratt's own tune is left open by the sources consulted here: the contents page attaches no composer's name to it, and her store page sells the volume as "Original and traditional multi-part arrangements" without labelling individual titles.[1][2] Nothing in those sources accounts for the name or points to a recording.[1][2]
