Near The Cavern: A Song History

← Back to Browse By Song

"Near The Cavern" is the ninth of the fourteen titles listed for DulciFlute 3, John Keane and Karen Keane's songbook of duets for Native American flute and mountain dulcimer, published by Fingers Of Steel.[1] The listing calls for a dulcimer tuned DAD and a flute in B minor, and the download includes the full book as a 26-page PDF, a separate PDF for each song, and a folder of 28 MP3 tracks.[1] It does not credit individual pieces to either of the Keanes.[1]

Watercolor view out through a rocky cave arch toward buildings, the bay and a volcano

Adolf von Heydeck, Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples from a Cave, watercolor with graphite, 1820. Shown for its cave; it has no connection to the tune.

The Keanes, performers from Shreveport, Louisiana, both earned music education degrees at Northeast Louisiana University, today the University of Louisiana-Monroe, and their DulcimerDownloads pages describe them as active composers whose own pieces for mountain dulcimer and Native American flute have appeared in books and on CDs.[2][3] The title names no particular cave, and the sources consulted here neither connect the tune to a real place nor mention any recording of it apart from the book's own.[1][2][3]
