Nadine Stole A Goat: A Song History
John Keane is named as the composer of "Nadine Stole A Goat," which appears in his Fingers Of Steel book 15 Originals, a 43-page set of fifteen of his own mountain dulcimer tunes.[1] Keane, who comes from Shreveport, Louisiana, performs and composes with Karen Keane; both trained in music education, and his bio credits the two with more than seventy years of teaching between them and a number of books and CDs of their own compositions for mountain dulcimer and Native American flute.[2] In the book's listing the tune is one of three in DAA tuning, alongside "Mule In The Tub" and "Wasp In The Wagon," while the first seven tunes listed use DAD.[1] Who, if anyone, Nadine was, and whether a goat was ever involved, is not explained in the sources consulted here, which also name no recording of the tune.[1][2]

Figure from a Crèche: Standing Mountain Goat, painted wood and terracotta with various textiles, 1780–1830. A Nativity-scene goat, shown in fun; it has no connection to the tune.
