I Cried For Days: A Song History

"I Cried For Days" is one of Bing Futch's own pieces in his tablature collection All Over The Map, where the DulcimerDownloads listing sets it in DAA tuning and credits him as composer.[1] J.O.B. Entertainment publishes the book, and the download includes the complete book, each piece as its own PDF, and MP3 recordings of the tunes.[1] Futch's own site calls the collection his first mountain dulcimer book and a companion of sorts to his first mountain dulcimer album, Dulcimerica: Volume 1, but it places this title among his "other works" that join the album pieces rather than among the tunes from that record.[2]

Japanese woodblock print of heavy rain falling in dark slanting lines over trees, a path with two travelers, and a distant shore

Utagawa Hiroshige, Night Rain at the Azuma Shrine (from the series Eight Views of the Environs of Edo), color woodblock print, mid-1830s. Shown for its mood; it has no connection to the song.

He recorded it instead on the follow-up album, Dulcimerica, Vol. 2, where it is the eighth of sixteen tracks and runs just under three and a half minutes; Apple Music lists a January 1, 2011 release, with the 2011 sound-recording copyright held by J.O.B. Entertainment.[3] Futch's store presents that second album as stylistically wider than the first and heavier on vocals, setting a few of his own tunes among folk standards and covers.[4] The sources consulted here do not say when or why he wrote the piece, or what its title refers to.[1][2][3][4]

Futch lives in Orlando, Florida, and his DulcimerDownloads biography describes him as an Americana performer on mountain dulcimer, Native American flute and ukulele, whose repertoire ranges from his own blues and roots-rock songs to Disney covers.[5] The same biography says that at the 2016 International Blues Challenge in Memphis he reached the finals and won the Solo/Duo "Best Guitarist" award while playing only mountain dulcimer.[5]
