Cedar Grove: A Song History
“Cedar Grove” is a tune by Jay Ungar; the mountain dulcimer edition sold through his and Molly Mason’s own online store credits it to Ungar alone, while marking other pieces as Mason’s or as joint compositions.[1] It appears on page 18 of Ungar and Mason’s collection Catskill Mountain Waltzes and Airs, which they describe as pieces composed over several decades, mixing tunes they had played or recorded with others that had stayed private until then.[2] Music retailers list the book as a Swinging Door Music publication of original waltzes and airs with chord symbols, each accompanied by a short note.[3][4] “Cedar Grove” is also one of 22 pieces from the book that Ungar and Mason offer in tablature for mountain dulcimer, arranged in DAD tuning.[1]

Asher Brown Durand, In the Woods, oil on canvas, 1855. The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Public domain (CC0). Shown for its subject; it has no connection to the tune.
