Cabernet: A Song History

“Cabernet” is an original tune by Molly Mason.[1] Mason plays guitar and piano and sings in a duo with fiddler Jay Ungar; the pair are best known for their work on the soundtrack of Ken Burns’s PBS series The Civil War, and they head the Ashokan Center, home of the Ashokan Music & Dance Camps.[2]

The tune appears in the duo’s collection Catskill Mountain Waltzes and Airs, a book of waltzes and airs written across several decades; its description says it mixes pieces they had performed, recorded or used in documentary soundtracks with others that had never left their notebooks.[3] The duo’s own shop also sells a mountain dulcimer edition of 22 tunes from the book, in which “Cabernet” is set in DAD tuning.[1]
