Assembled By The Fireside, Thoughts Provoked: A Song History
"Assembled By The Fireside, Thoughts Provoked" is the first piece listed in Ellen Pratt's Ensemble Arrangements For The Mountain Dulcimer, Volume 8, a book Pratt publishes herself that combines traditional tunes with contemporary pieces for players from beginner to advanced; here it is scored for five dulcimers in DAD tuning.[1] Pratt has played the dulcimer for more than two decades and began composing for it around 2004; ensemble writing and arranging came later, once she had joined a dulcimer orchestra in northeastern Connecticut.[2] The listing names an outside composer for one other piece in the book but none for this one, and the sources consulted here do not say who wrote it or when.[1][2]

Louis Léopold Boilly, Woman in Front of a Fireplace, black chalk and gray wash heightened with white chalk on blue paper, c. 1805–7. Shown for its fireside; it has no connection to the piece.
