Aaron O'Rourke - Secrets To Successful Flatpicking

Regular price $25.00

"Flatpicking." Not that hard, right? You play your dulcimer with a flat pick. Got it. Done. Moving on...

Not so fast, there! When we talk about flatpicking, we're discussing a whole range of skills and techniques, from using (of course!) a pick, but also where to pick, how to pick, when to choose one string over another, how to hold the pick, how to hold the instrument, and so much more.

This is the perfect book for someone that already plays the mountain dulcimer, either as a fingerpicker (don't get me started again) or as a strummer. Once you get your head around the techniques that Aaron lays out for us here, you'll be able to create your own, unique style of play, mixing flatpicking with strumming and (if you're up for it) a bit of fingerpicking.

The more you know, the better you play. The better you play, the more fun it is.

As usual, you can't go wrong with any of Aaron's books, and this is one of his very best.

Flatpicking Tips from the Best

Aaron O'Rourke's flatpicking skills mark him as the most technically skilled Mountain Dulcimer player around today. The tips in this book show how he got there. Of special value is his concern for explaining not only the "what" of technique, but also the "why." The descriptions are especially useful for beginners working on building their flatpicking skills, and the numerous examples and exercises will help more advanced players hone their skills.

Best Flatpicking Guide

This is an excellent guide to dulcimer flatpicking. It starts at the most basic level. Each new arrangement gets progressively more complex. By the end of the book you are doing some very advanced flatpicking. Also, nice selection of favorite tunes and lesser known compositions. Instructional text is clear, concise and easy to follow. This is the best source for flatpicking instruction of which I am aware. Highly recommended.
